Connecting to Your Local Network
Connecting to Your Local Network
Whether you’re a new user joining an existing network or a deployer adding infrastructure, these steps get you connected to the right community mesh.
Step 1 — Find Your Local Network
- Check map.meshcore.dev for nearby MeshCore nodes
- Check meshmap.net for nearby Meshtastic nodes
- Check nodakmesh.org/tools/node-planner if you’re in the Northern Plains
- Search for your region + “mesh” on Discord to find local communities
Step 2 — Confirm Radio Settings
Once you’ve identified your local network, confirm its radio preset before flashing or configuring hardware. Mismatched settings are the #1 reason new nodes can’t discover the network.
Step 3 — Flash and Configure
For MeshCore: use flasher.meshcore.io and select the appropriate firmware for your hardware. Apply the USA/Canada preset for most North American networks.
Step 4 — Test Connectivity
Open the companion app and check the node list. You should see nearby repeaters appear within a few minutes. If no nodes appear:
- Confirm radio preset matches the network
- Try outdoors with the device elevated — indoor range is limited
- Check the network map to confirm nodes actually exist near you
- Ask in the local Discord — someone may be able to assist with a test ping
Step 5 — Join the Community
All active networks have Discord or Telegram communities. Join before deploying infrastructure so you can coordinate channel settings, coverage needs, and avoid duplicating existing coverage.
