Geographic Context

The Los Angeles Basin is enclosed on three sides by significant mountain ranges: the Santa Monica Mountains to the north and west, the San Gabriel Mountains to the north and east, and the Santa Ana Mountains to the southeast. These ranges reach 5,000–10,000 ft elevation and provide exceptional elevated repeater sites — but they also create terrain-shadowed dead zones in the valleys between. The basin floor sits at roughly 200–500 ft, and coastal nodes contend with the marine layer affecting VHF/UHF more than LoRa but still a factor in some conditions.

Network Status

Los Angeles and Southern California host growing Meshtastic and MeshCore communities. The region has both MeshCore-specific deployments (particularly around ham radio clubs in the Inland Empire and Orange County) and a broader Meshtastic network that covers the LA metro. The two ecosystems co-exist but are not interoperable at the RF layer — verify which network your local community uses before deploying.

Preset Diversity

SoCal has multiple sub-communities with varying presets and frequencies:

  • LA metro area — tends toward Long Fast for Meshtastic nodes.
  • OC / Inland Empire MeshCore deployments — some use the 927.875 MHz regional frequency (where FCC Part 15 rules allow). Verify with your local MeshCore community.

Always check with the local community before deploying — preset assumptions can vary significantly between sub-regions here.

Notable Repeater Sites

  • Mt. Wilson (5,710 ft) — the dominant communications site in LA, already hosting a dense cluster of amateur radio repeaters. LoRa nodes here cover most of the LA Basin with excellent line of sight.
  • Santiago Peak (5,687 ft) — in the Santa Ana Mountains, covering Orange County and the Inland Empire.
  • Mount Disappointment (5,874 ft) — in the San Gabriel Mountains, providing coverage into the San Gabriel Valley and north LA.

Terrain Challenges

The LA Basin has high node density but inter-valley propagation is limited without mountain-top repeaters. The following zones are relatively separate coverage areas:

  • San Fernando Valley (north of the Santa Monicas)
  • San Gabriel Valley (east of Pasadena)
  • Inland Empire (Riverside / San Bernardino)
  • Coastal LA / South Bay

Bridging these zones reliably requires repeaters on the separating ridgelines.

MeshCore Activity

The Southern California MeshCore community maintains repeaters and room server infrastructure in the region. Contact via local ham radio clubs (particularly in the Inland Empire and OC) or the MeshCore Discord for current node and room server details.

Community

Multiple Discord servers exist for different SoCal sub-regions. LAARES (Los Angeles Amateur Radio Emergency Service) has members active in the mesh community and integrates mesh into EmComm planning.
